Electoral races in Canada, Quebec and municipalities: Non-profit housing, at the forefront.

Montreal, January 30, 2025. As the electoral races begin and accelerate over the coming months, the Alliance of Affordable Housing Corporations of the Territory of Quebec (ACHAT) invites the entire class federal, Quebec and municipal policy to redouble its efforts in order to keep non-profit housing a national priority.

Since the last election, the housing crisis has marked the political scene, so much so that in 2024, it was chosen as the most important news of the year by the Canadian Press. More than ever, non-profit housing concerns all political parties and poses a central and lasting solution to this crisis.

The ACHAT thus launches a call for a “dialogue of solutions” with all parties at all levels of government as well as all people wishing to be candidates for elections, in a non-partisan and constructive framework.

ACHAT recommendations.

To fuel the dialogue towards concrete avenues of action, ACHAT provides political teams and public authorities (federal, provincial and municipal) with a summary of its recommendations for “Building the affordable Quebec of tomorrow”.

All of the recommendations by government levels converge towards a common point: making the minimum target of 20% market share for non-profit housing a shared objective in all public policies linked to the socio-economic development of our territory.

A shared responsibility.

Although public authorities have a key role to play in housing, they are not the only ones who must change the way things are done. It is a shared responsibility with field players in the social economy (NPOs and housing cooperatives, municipal offices) to help develop the Quebec housing model.  It is also in this sense that our recommendations are made.
